IEEM’s autumn conference, taking place in Cardiff, will bring together professionals from all backgrounds who together face the challenges that renewable energy developments represent for biodiversity.
There is an evolving policy context for renewables which delegates will gain considerable insight into. Hydropower, wind turbines, offshore and terrestrial developments - all have significant implications for ecologists and environmental managers and professionals engaged in the planning process. Sessions will take place with researchers who are filling the gaps in our ecological knowledge and helping to influence decision makers. By applying best practice to renewable technology developments we hope to enhance understanding of how to protect and conserve the most ‘at risk’ habitats and species.
Key topics
- Challenges facing the renewables sector
- Key issues for ecological professionals working with renewable energy projects
- Gathering the evidence – good practice with ecological surveys
- Renewables in terrestrial and marine environments (good practice for hydropower / predicting impacts within the marine environment / consents for offshore renewables)
- How does the latest research help the decision-makers? (how birds respond to wind turbine developments / latest findings of the national bat and wind turbines project / potential impacts on peatland habitats)
- Achieving effective engagement with statutory consultees
- Issues for implementation and construction (protecting biodiversity during the construction of renewable developments / renewables success with biodiversity offsetting / landscape scale opportunities to integrate renewables into Green Infrastructure / creating a shared vision for biodiversity and renewables)
Who should attend
- Ecologists and environmental management professionals working to protect and enhance biodiversity as part of renewable energy projects
- Those engaged in developing policies and processes to marry the twin objectives of biodiversity protection and renewable energy generation
- Colleagues in the renewable energy sector keen to understand more about the potential impact of renewable energy development on biodiversity and how problems can be avoided.
