Scotland and Marine and Coastal SIG Member Network Event: Avian Flu: Impacts and Developments

This member network event organised by the Marine and Coastal Special Interest Group and the Scotland Section Committee heard from Claire Smith, RSPB Scotland about the unprecedented outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza. Over 65 species have tested positive in the UK with tens of thousands of birds killed over the last 2 years.

The talk covered the origins of the virus, how it is spread and mutates, and which species have been particularly affected. It also summarised the policy advocacy work that RSPB, other eNGOs and birdlife partners are doing to push governments and statutory bodies to do more to address the virus and try and mitigate impacts as well as new research and surveys planned for 2023.
