Why your Member Networks need you

CIEEM's Member Networks (Geographic Sections and Special Interest Groups) are run by members for members to provide opportunities to network, share knowledge and learn more about the science and practice of our profession.  There is also a role to play in promoting professional standards, feeding into consultations and representing the views of members at a local, national and international level.

Every member of a Geographic Section or Special Interest Group committee is a volunteer with a busy day job or other commitments.  The support of the wider CIEEM membership in volunteering to be part of their committee, or simply providing support with running an event, is vital to ensuring that each Section/Group can offer the best support to members and the profession in their area.

CIEEM members of all grades are eligible to join Member Network committees and this is a valuable opportunity to have an active role in the activities of your professional body.  It can also be a useful addition to your resume.

What’s involved?

Most committees will meet around four times a year, either in person or by teleconference, and organise activities such as field trips or talks (or even a conference!).  The level of activity in each committee will vary according to local circumstances and you can follow their activities on the Member Networks News pages.

Being part of your Member Network committee can be a rewarding experience and even a few hours of your time will help add value to their work.  You’ll need to be prepared to attend all or most committee meetings (for which reasonable travel expenses can be reclaimed) and get involved to some extent with activities such as:

    • organising or running an event or conference;
    • writing articles and news items on committee activities;
    • coordinating a relevant policy response;
    • talking to members on the CIEEM LinkedIn group;
    • monitoring the committee email account or social media;
    • speaking to students at a school or university careers event in your area; or
    • representing CIEEM with a stand at an external event.

For more details on the functioning of the Member Network committees please visit the Committee Toolkit on the Members’ area of the CIEEM website (login required).

If you don’t want to join the committee formally, you might like to consider simply lending a hand with one specific event that is local to you.  Whatever your interest is, your Member Networks will be glad to hear from you.

What are the benefits?

  • Taking part in Member Network activities will help you stand out from the crowd when looking for employment and demonstrate your commitment to the natural environment.
  • It will provide you with the chance to get involved with lots of great initiatives and projects that you may not have known about.
  • You will have the opportunity to network with lots of different people involved in many areas of ecology and environmental management.
  • You get to help influence the future of CIEEM and the professions of ecology and environmental management.
