LLW Repository Ltd is a waste management company that provides services to Customers to treat and dispose of low level radioactive wasteUnder the management of UKNWM a consortium made up of AECOM, Studsvik UK and AREVA we manage the national Low Level Waste Repository in West Cumbria and oversee a national Low Level Waste programme to ensure that lower activity waste is managed effectively on behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.

The LLWR site is adjacent to the Drigg Coast SAC/SSSI which it borders along its western boundary. The site provides a valuable habitat mosaic which supports a widespread population of various fauna including Protected Species. 

LLWR is about to embark upon a major programme of work known as the Repository Development Programme (RDP). This programme involves closure and capping of existing disposal facilities and construction of new facilities in the future. RDP extends over a number of decades and the first tranche of work is expected to be completed within the next ten years.

This is a key role providing the environmental and ecological capability needed by LLWR and also supporting the sites Repository Development Programme (RDP). It will involve working within a small environmental team, reporting to the LLWR Environmental Manager, dealing with all aspects of environmental advice and support associated with a Nuclear Licenced Site holding Environmental Permits.  The role will provide a unique opportunity to develop solutions to complex environmental and ecological challenges.


  • Taking a lead on the provision of ecological advice for LLWR.
  • Support all aspects of environmental/ecological work to ensure successful, compliant delivery of RDP and other LLWR work, as part of an environmental team.
  • Document production/checking to enable the delivery of the required work programmes and planning requirements (e.g. Risk Assessments, Precautionary Methods of Workings, Best Available Technique assessments, environmental reviews and reports)
  • Liaison with external ecologists or other experts as required to support LLWR core competencies, to ensure delivery of programmes
  • Undertake office based and on site assurance of work activities to ensure ongoing compliance with legal and LLWR procedural requirements
  • Identify and assist in the implementation of improvements to activities at LLWR
  • Maintaining technical competence and currency with respect to modern standards and methodologies relevant to the environmental discipline
  • Undertake support to the LLWR environmental team including standing in for other members as necessary and agreed.

Essential Skills / Qualifications:

  • Bachelor Degree in Environmental, Ecology or related subject. Master’s Degree or PhD would be advantageous.
  • Experience in delivery of ecological advise in a similar environment to the LLWR
  • Strong technical competence with experience of delivering excellent environmental performance in a heavily regulated environment.
  • Formal report writing / production
  • Good stakeholder management skills

Desirable Skills /Qualifications

  • Membership of appropriate Environmental professional body / Membership of CIEEM (Chartered Status preferable).
  • Holder of protected species survey and/or development licences (e.g. bats, great crested newts, natter jack toads etc.).
  • Experience in Phase 2 vegetation survey work, Experience in major habitat creation projects and biodiversity offsetting.
  • Knowledge/experience of dealing with Planning conditions
  • Knowledge of current environmental regulatory frameworks (Environmental Permits etc) and environmental legislation
  • Geology / Hydrogeology knowledge, Contaminated land assessment or remediation experience, GIS or similar database familiarity
  • Waste treatment and waste characterisation experience
  • Application of BAT/BPM/BPEO in an industrial context
  • Radiological experience
