Due to continued growth, we are looking for a qualified senior ecologist to join our small vibrant team of arboricultural and landscape consultants based across the south-east.   You will be a key person in our growth plan and will lead the development of our ecological function.  We employ highly qualified, experienced, motivated, friendly people who enjoy a home based working environment supported with the latest technology.  Many of our clients have grown with us and we enjoy contributing to their successes.

You will have:

  • Experience of extended Phase 1/PEA skills to protected species-specific survey techniques, mitigation schemes and ideally EWPS licence applications 
  • Strong knowledge of relevant UK and European legislation
  • Ability to establish good client relationships
  • Ability to fit in with our diverse and friendly team
  • Full driving licence
  • Full membership of CIEEM
  • Degree or equivalent in an ecology related discipline.

Opportunity:  An opportunity has arisen for a dynamic, ambitious and talented ecologist to build and develop our ecology side of the business.  This role is a fantastic opportunity to realise your ambitions and join the senior management team, reporting directly to the Practice Principal.

Responsibilities:

  • Undertaking a wide range of ecological surveys including extended Phase 1 habitat and protected species surveys and mitigation and more demanding ecological work.
  • Carrying out desk studies, consultations, research, data management and analysis and report writing.
  • Prepare bids/quotations for Phase 1/PEA habitat surveys and protected species surveys, mitigation and biodiversity enhancement plans.
  • To either apply for the necessary protected species licences or manage a sub contractor to do this.
  • To advise clients on the implications of the timeframes for surveys and how best to project plan to ensure they have the necessary information when they are ready to submit a planning application. 
  • To attend design team meetings and on-site meetings with planning consultants, LPA officers etc as required.
  • Instruct and co-ordinate subcontractors.  Prepare specifications, review and manage delivery of work completed by subcontractors.
  • To contribute to the ecological sections of Environmental Impact Assessments.
  • To manage project based finances including providing the information needed to accounts for invoicing.
  • To provide financial quarterly reporting information for the ecology side of the business.
  • To liaise with internal team members regarding landscape and arboricultural issues and external team members in the wider design team.
  • To contribute to corporate marketing initiatives to promote the ecology side of the business.

Essential qualifications and experience:

  1. Honours degree in Ecology, Biology or other relevant Environmental discipline
  2. Full membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM)
  3. Extensive experience working in a similar position in the consultancy sector, potentially in a larger organisation and wanting to work for a small company where they can make a real difference
  4. Excellent report writing skills
  5. Strong commercial awareness and experience of bidding and winning work
  6. Proven experience in managing and undertaking a range of fieldwork, including habitat and protected species surveys
  7. At least one protected species licence, preferably for bats or newts and experience in the preparation of protected species licence applications.
  8. Excellent knowledge of current UK legislation and best practice policy

 

Desirable qualifications and experience:

  1. Experience of writing EIA chapters
