Job details

A busy expanding ecological consultancy based in the Suffolk countryside. Established in 2002, Abrehart Ecology has developed a reputation for providing high quality ecological surveying and advisory services to statutory bodies, conservation NGOs, the utility sector and private developers. We specialise in botanical, Phase 1 and National Vegetation Classification surveys, aquatic invertebrates and macrophyte surveys, including intertidal habitats, coastal lagoons and mollusc ecology.

The Role

Our expanding work load means that we require an ecologist with a minimum of 3 years’

experience in the consultancy sector, or closely related field. Protected species knowledge is required for this role, though much of the work will be on the more unusual groups we work with, especially aquatic invertebrates and molluscs, supporting Toby Abrehart on projects. As a small company we envisage that the role will be fairly flexible across the range of work which we carry out. Which includes standard protected species work, field work, bat, GCN and reptile surveys, but the role will focus on the aquatic invertebrate side of the business.

In return we offer an enjoyable working environment, a chance to work on exciting and wide- ranging projects across East Anglia and the UK, in-house and external PPD opportunities and room for progression

Key responsibilities:

  • Assisting in the planning and undertaking a variety of ecological surveys including, but not limited to, protected species surveys of lowland terrestrial, estuarine and freshwater habitats and protected species assessments;
  • Working in the laboratory is an important part of the role, with responsibility for managing the lab and assistance with identification on aquatic invertebrates with training;
  • Carrying out some protected species mitigation; and
  • Producing associated reports to a high standard with opportunities for writing and publishing scientific papers.

Requirements (Essential):

  • Experience of surveying for protected species and following best practice guidelines;
  • Good working knowledge of mitigation principles and environmental/wildlife legislation in relation to protected and invasive species;
  • Excellent report writing and IT skills including GIS and access;
  • Minimum of BSc in Ecology or related subject;
  • A willingness to get involved in a range of other aspects of our work;
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload to meet project deadlines; and
    • A full driving licence is essential for this role, as is a willingness to carry out surveys during unsociable hours and at times travel and stay away from home.
    • A specialism in one or more of our areas of expertise; and
    • To hold or be eligible for associate of full a CIEEM membership.

Please send a CV and cover letter, by the 21st November 2017, to Toby Abrehart at or post to Abrehart Ecology, The Barn, Bridge Farm, Brandeston, Suffolk, IP13 7BP confirming that you are eligible to work in the UK, identifying how you meet the capability criteria and an indication of potential start date.
