Job details

Natural England is seeking an environmental specialist with a good understanding of the potential impacts of development on the natural environment to work on a wide variety of high profile cases and play a key role in the protection of nature and landscapes across Kent and Sussex.

As a Lead Adviser, your role will be varied and will involve leading on our engagement with local planning authorities, the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) and many other stakeholders to provide environmental planning advice, help shape local plans, and advise on marine licences. The role will involve providing advice to developers and regulators, and securing environmental enhancements to benefit the terrestrial, coastal and marine components of our landscape-scale focus areas.

We are looking for someone with an environmental background, with a good understanding of the potential impacts of development on the natural environment, and a desire to work with others to find solutions that deliver positive environmental outcomes. You don’t have to currently be in a planning role but it would be helpful to have an understanding of environmental legislation and the planning system or the marine licencing system.

Natural England’s Sussex and Kent team is one of 14 area teams across England. With offices in Ashford and Worthing, the team, of around 80 staff, is involved in a wide and diverse range of environmental work across these counties. The iconic landscapes of Sussex and Kent include the high chalk outcrops of the North and South Downs, through agricultural lands, onto the rich coastal and marine habitats surrounding these counties. At its heart is the High Weald, one of the best surviving medieval landscapes in northern Europe and home to diverse ancient woodland.
