About the role

As part of this growth, we are keen to recruit a Principal/Senior Ecologist to lead a team of ecologists in our Highways Environmental Services team based in Croydon OR Fleet Place, London with occasional travel to Croydon. 

You will lead our service delivery and development to existing internal and external clients and help to win new business for the wider team. This is an excellent opportunity and scope to develop your own specialism, offer new services across the sector, and potentially become a national player in influencing the ecology market in the UK. There is also an opportunity to take on the role of Project Manager, and we offer the opportunity to become qualified through the Association for Project Management, should this be a path you wish your career to take. Be part of a multi-disciplinary team  You will work within a multi-disciplinary environment team on a range of projects across a numerous sectors, both in the region and nationally. You will be part of a dynamic global ecology practice who work collaboratively to deliver ecological support, working together to ensure the development of its members. Lead a growing team This role will suit an individual who wants to contribute to the growth of the environment business and help deliver our ecological consultancy and mitigation services in a fast moving, client focused, commercial environment through leading a team of passionate ecologists. Work on a range of projects You will be office based however there will be a requirement to undertake site surveys and attend client meetings. In addition, there will be a need for general ecological support to a range of projects within an environmental team, working closely with other disciplines to ensure ecological objectives for projects are delivered successfully, within budget and to programme.   • Chartered Environmentalist or Chartered Ecologist
  • BSc in an ecology related subject
  • Full member of CIEEM
  • Experience in leading and directing teams of field surveyors on large-scale projects
  • Excellent experience in the UK ecological consultancy market, with a strong external-facing, client-orientated approach
  • Excellent understanding of UK nature conservation legislation
  • Experience in undertaking ecological impact assessments for EIAs and Habitat Regulation Assessments
  • Willingness to /or experience in managing and training junior staff


  • Excellent protected species knowledge and experience; ideally a holder of at least one protected species licence and of Natural England mitigation licences for at least one species within the last five years
  • Excellent project and financial management experience, with a proven ability to manage teams and input to large infrastructure projects
  • Proven track record in winning work
