Meeting with Cornwall County Ecologist

14 April 2016, Truro

Over 30 ecologists from Cornwall and some from Devon attended this event with Natasha Collings-Costello, MCIEEM, County Ecologist for Cornwall.  Natasha highlighted some of the recent initiatives in the County including the recently published draft Environmental Growth Strategy and how she was working closely with the Planners to improve their understanding of ecological issues and opportunities.  Her main emphasis was the forthcoming Biodiversity Supplementary Planning Document (SPD), part of the Local Plan in progress, and the measures she was including in this. There will be particular emphasis on quantifying habitat lost and gained and ECOP, and on ecological enhancements within developments.

Natasha also talked about the European Sites SPD, which applies to SACs and their zone of influence, how she envisaged SAMM and SANG working in Cornwall and some of the unresolved issues.  This topic stimulated a lively discussion about some of the issues around developer contributions, ecological mitigation measures generally and how this can be monitored (and enforced) given the increasing pressure on Council resources (and only one County Ecologist).
