David Stubbs announced as winner of 2013 CIEEM Medal

05 Jul 2013

The Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM), the professional membership body for ecologists and environmental managers, has awarded its prestigious Institute Medal to David Stubbs, the former Head of Sustainability for the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG). This year’s Medal is awarded to Stubbs in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the development of ecologically sustainable sports facilities and sports event management.

It is fitting that Stubbs should receive this recognition as the anniversary of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games fast approaches.  The 2012 London Games promised to be the most sustainable ever and Stubbs played a key role in delivering on that promise; one that created new standards and left a legacy of a blueprint for future Olympics and a range of green spaces and community facilities that will be enjoyed for generations to come.

The Institute Medal is CIEEM’s highest accolade and is awarded annually in recognition of a distinguished contribution to the field of ecology and environmental management.  This is the first time since the inception of the Medal that it has been awarded to a professional ecologist working outside the traditional boundaries of the discipline. In awarding the Institute Medal to Stubbs, CIEEM is acknowledging the importance of ecologists being able to broaden their scope and apply their experience in senior, influential roles in new areas.

Among his achievements while at LOCOG, Stubbs was instrumental in the development of ISO 20121, the first certifiable international sustainability management system standard, which is already having a strong impact on the global events sector.  He also oversaw the work to develop the first ever full carbon footprint for an Olympic and Paralympic Games project, and was responsible for developing the innovative London 2012 Food Vision; the basis for serving 16 million sustainably sourced meals during the 2012 Games, including strong emphasis on environmental and ethical criteria.  This has had massive influence on the hospitality catering sector and is an important legacy from the Games.
