CIEEM attend Green Week 2015 on Nature and Biodiversity

12 Jun 2015

As part of our engagement with the European Commission’s call for evidence consultation on the ‘fitness’ of the EU Birds and Habitats Directives, CIEEM was represented last week at Green Week by our Policy and Communications Manager, Jason Reeves.

We submitted our consultation response through our membership of the European Network of Environmental Professionals (which had opened a direct dialogue with the consultancy conducting the consultation on behalf of the Commission) and had an exhibition stand at Green Week. This response was turned into a Position Paper that was promoted at Green Week, which this year was on the theme of Nature and Biodiversity. The Position Paper highlighted the importance of professionals to achieving the aims of the Directives, including:

  • the importance of professional competence and continuing professional development;
  • recognition for the role of appropriately qualified and skilled environmental professionals; and
  • the need to build up professional standards and share knowledge and skills across Europe.

CIEEM also took the opportunity to network with relevant colleagues and policy-makers in Brussels, including DG Environment's Head of Biodiversity Francois Wakenhut (pictured below).

The second part of the Fitness Check consultation, seeking public opinion, is now open until 24 July. We urge all members to complete the consultation, which can be found at http://ec.europa.eu/environment/consultations/nature_fitness_check_en.htm.
