Supreme Court rules that Parliament must approve triggering Article 50

24 Jan 2017

The Supreme Court has ruled that the Government cannot trigger Article 50 on its own and must seek Parliamentary approval to do so.

This is a setback to the Prime Minister's Brexit plans, however it is uncertain what effect it will have on her proposed timeframe to trigger Article 50 by the end of March 2017.

The Supreme Court also ruled that the devolved adminstrations did not need to beconsulted.
