RSPB launches UK raptor persecution map hub

16 Aug 2018

The RSPB has launched an interactive, UK raptor persecution mapping system that will allow the public to examine the extent of reported raptor persecution crimes throughout the UK.

The persecution of birds of prey has been a National Wildlife Crime Priority since 2009 and is a widespread problem in the UK affecting species such as hen harriers and golden eagles.

The Map Hub comprises two interactive maps – one which can be filtered by year and incident type, and the other that provides an overview ‘heat map’ of confirmed incidents across the UK.

For the timeframe 2012-2016, the mostly densly reported areas occur in upland areas: in North Yorkshire, the Scottish borders and Aberdeenshire. Other research has linked this pattern to the management of land for driven grouse shooting.

More information about the Map Hub can be found here.
