Committee MemberJonathan Best MCIEEM

I have been the Ecology Officer at Southwark Council for over 13 years. During that time I have written two Biodiversity Action Plans. The first had 113 actions based on Haps and Saps and Southwark delivered 101 of the actions. The second BAP was theme based in response to changing policy from Government.

In 2005 I formed and have chaired the Southwark Biodiversity Partnership which is made up of charities, councillors and community groups.

I have developed a number of skills relating to this role including: Project Management, habitat management and enhancement, understanding the planning process, leading volunteers on practical conservation tasks, management of non-native invasive species, contract procurement and management including development of monitoring systems.  I have designated 7 Local Nature Reserves and organised an ecological survey of the whole borough. I contribute to the formation of local plans including Neighbourhood plans, Area Action Plans and the Borough Unitary Plan. I have driven the biodiversity agenda and sought continuous gain of habitats and green infrastructure in the urban environment.

In addition to this I have chaired the London Borough Biodiversity Forum since 2013. This has resulted in attendance to the London Biodiversity Partnership board (now dissolved), and acting as an expert witness for the London Assembly Environment Committee.

So I have a good grasp of policy and delivery ecology in a local authority. I have recently been advising on biodiversity policy for the London Councils.

I am the Lead Environmental Advisor at the Port of Dover, where I have worked for 3 years.  I have an MSc in Environmental Conservation, studied at University of Greenwich, graduating in 2011.  I previously worked as a lecturer teaching Level 1 practical conservation at a further education college and hold a dormice licence.

My varied career and experience of environmental management bring diversity to the committee and represent environmental management which I feel is under represented at present.  I intend to upgrade my membership level from graduate this year using experience gained in my current role.

I have recently retrained to become an ecologist at the University Centre Sparsholt Hampshire. I was proud to be awarded First Class Honours by the University of Portsmouth in BSc Ecology and Conservation Management. During my studies, I gained substantial experience through volunteering to monitor bats, dormouse and water voles within Hampshire. I have also gained experience as a professional ecologist since graduating. I believe my previous experience as a Science Teacher would be an advantage to understand and connect with the modern student. I am also an active STEM Ambassador highlighting Ecology as a future profession.

Committee MemberCraig Llewellyn ACIEEM

I am an ambitious and hardworking ecologist with 6 years’ experience in ecological consultancy, building up a wide range of both public and private sector projects, in protected species survey & planning, EcIA and green infrastructure. I am an active volunteer in wildlife conservation, and in my spare time I am an NDMS dormice monitor, BTO volunteer, and most recently have joined my local barn owl and raptor group.

If I am successfully elected, I will be an active, enthusiastic member of my local committee, bringing innovative ideas to benefit its members and will represent them to the best of my ability. This will include organising key events, providing input into new policy, best practice, cross-discipline working, and furthermore engage with professionals, students and members of the public in promoting the development and understanding of ecology and environmental management.
